Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

Oilfield auction: AGP opposes BJP proposes

Amid a state wide brouhaha on the move to auction 12 oil fields in Assam, both AGP and BJP have been taking contradictory positions on the sensitive issue. BJP leaders and ministers have strongly advocated the move saying that it would, in fact, help Assam claim the rights over its own resources. “We are bound to endorse the move. We can’t oppose it. ULFA-I opposes oil field auction

The United Liberation Front of Asom (I) has pledged to prevent the move to auction 12 oil fields in Assam. In a strongly worded statement, the outfit’s publicity secretary Aronodoy Asom called it an anti-national steps and that the nation and its wealth are not at all safe at the hands of Delhi. He said that the people in power at Dispur should not allow it to happen in the name of royalty. “If Britain can pull out of the European Union with the help of a referendum why Delhi and Dispur can’t resolve the Indo-Assam conflict?,” said the ULFA(I) leader.     

Blow for NSCN(IM); Chishi Swu no more

In a major blow for NSCN(IM) and its negotiation for a greater Nagalim, Isaac Chishi Swu passed away on Tuesday. Gogoi dead opposed to oil field auction

Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi took on the Centre opposing the move to auction 12 oil fields along with dozens of oilfields across the country. Addressing a press conference in Jorhat on Tuesday, Gogoi said that he and his party won’t allow it to happen. “We are here to oppose the move tooth and nail. We won’t remain silent. What forces the Modi government to auction these oil fields? This is a government for the rich and industrialists only,” said the former Chief Minister.

Assam bandh meets partial response

Normal life in many parts of Assam remains completely paralyzed on Tuesday when an Ahom organization enforced a 12 hour bandh opposing the move to auction 12 oil fields. The bandh mainly disrupted normal life in the upper Assam districts where schools and colleges, shops and markets, banks and offices refused to open. Expressing shocks at the mysterious death of a lady scribe in Punjab, the Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) demands an authentic probe into the incident to find the culprits and book them under the law. Freelance scribe Anshita Bawa (22) died under a strange situation on 22 April 2016 when she went to meet her friends, but she did not reach them. Rights convention raises major demands

A huge convention of human rights organizations in New Delhi recently outlined four major demands before the government to heal the wounds of the torture victims. Attended by human rights experts, activists, lawyers, journalists. Doctors and academics, the national convention in the capital asked the government to ratify the convention against torture which has been pending since 1997. The convention further demanded a new bill to in Parliament to prevent the torture incorporating within it the recommendations of the Select Committee of Parliament. Change in Act to safeguard immigrants!

The Centre is believed to have been clearing the decks to grant refugee status to the Hindu Bangladeshi immigrants. According to highly placed sources the home ministry is finetuning some changes in the vital clauses of the Indian Citizenship Act 1955 to enable these migrants to stay in the country. The entire task is expected to end before August 15. If the amended Act is cleared in Parliament the refugees from Bangladesh and Pakistan would be able to stay in the state.
