Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

AHRC orders probe into Raha firing

The Assam State Human Rights Commission has asked the government to probe the recent police firing in Raha where a local protester was killed. A division bench of the panel comprising Dr Justice AH Saikia and Tarun Phookan issued notice to the Chief Secretary to get the probe done by an officer of the rank of secretary and to submit the findings within the next 30 days.A local protestor Mintu Deori was killed and several others sustained serious injury when police opened fire on a group of protestors at Raha who tried to enforce a bandh on July 16 demanding the proposed AIIMS in the area.  

Price rise brews more protests

The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) hit the streets with a 5-hour statewide demonstration demanding measures to check  price hike by the government.AJYCP leaders and activists in large numbers thronged the district headquarters in the morning where they staged the demo. Woman killed in Guwahati landslide

Landslide is back in Guwahati to wreak havoc in the premier north eastern city on Wednesday. The incident took place in Kharghuli area where a women lost her life in the morning. According to information, a huge rock along with mud buried the women alive when she was washing dishes in her yard in Mandakini Path. SDRF personnel later recovered her body.

Pema Khandu govt clears floor test

Pema Khandu has cleared the floor test on Wednesday a couple of days after the Congress legislator took over as Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister. The 37 year old son of former Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu who is expected to expand his cabinet was opposed by 11 BJP MLAs. The House further elected Tsering Norbu Thongdok as the new Speaker hours after Nabam Rebia stepped down on Tuesday evening. New MHRC Chairperson

Dr Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia, Chairperson of Assam Human rights Commission has been appointed as the first Chairperson of Meghalaya Human Rights Commission by the Governor of Meghalaya, V Shanmuganathan. Dr. Justice Saikia has formally taken over charge of the office of the Chairperson, Meghalaya Human Rights Commission wef 15 July, 2016. Assembly changes sitting time

The ongoing Assam Assembly session is all set to start from 9-30 from Wednesday instead of 9 in the morning. The proposal was unanimously passed on the floor after parliamentary affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary moved the proposal. Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Das announced the slight change in the timings which will come into force from Wednesday. The concluding time is 2 in the afternoon. But on Friday, the morning session will end at 11.30 in the morning while the evening session will be from 3 to 5 in the afternoon.

Raha issue dominates House proceedings

An escalating tension in Raha got no less prominence in the Assam Assembly on its day one of the budget session on Monday. The Opposition cornered the Sonowal Government alleging its failure to properly deal with the situation. Caught in a barrage of criticism health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma blamed it all on the erstwhile Congress Government for finalizing Changsari as the ideal location for the proposed AIIMS.
